Drive systems for printers conventionally may fall into one of two categories: lead screw or cable. A cable system is less expensive than lead screw, but a lead screw is much easier to control with a DC motor than a cable system. Moreover, power requirements for a lead screw type escapement system are somewhat higher than for a cable system inasmuch as a lead screw suffers the normal deficiencies of increased friction.
