A microprogram link occurs when one subroutine, normally addressing a control store by use of a next address field in each micro instruction, calls a second subroutine. When executing a link, the calling subroutine must set up an address for use by the called subroutine. This microcode address will provide the called subroutine with a place to which it can link back, or return, after it has been executed.
