The purpose of a microprogram trap mechanism is to allow a micro program to deal with asynchronous or exception conditions. In general, the trap mechanism latches up these conditions, and at an appropriate time, it interrupts the microprogram which is currently active and starts up another microprogram which will process the trap condition. This relieves the microprogram, in general, from explicitly testing for these events, yielding better performance (fewer cycles) and lower microprogram cost (fewer words).
