This article describes a phase-locked logic counter used for strobing serial binary data. The problem solved is illustrated in Fig. 1 where trace A is a received data waveform and the required clock (trace B) is to be constructed from the transitions of waveform A. The period P of the required clock is a fixed predetermined value, and so the object of the generator is to phase-lock onto A (the transitions of which are data dependent) so that the positive transition of B can be used to sample A.
