This method of measuring the "hysteresis" or input excursion necessary to switch the output of a line receiver between its binary levels employs a ramp-sample-hold technique. The basic elements utilized in the method comprise a voltage reference for the line receiver, a capacitor, means to discharge the capacitor, current sources to charge and discharge the capacitor, and a compare circuit to disconnect the current sources when the receiver switches.
