Use of Dummy Character to Add Timing Margin for Typewriter

Because of the time required for mechanical typewriter operations for printing, it is sometimes necessary to set up an overall printing cycle with an assumption that some associated operation, such as a case shift, will be completed. To permit the status of the associated operation to be checked part way through the print cycle, a dummy character that results in no imprint may be loaded to initiate the print cycle.
