A fundamental requirement for piezoelectric driven drop on demand ink jet printheads is the exclusion of free gas from the discharge cavity. During manufacturing, special procedures must be employed to purge the gas from the printhead. These procedures, although not complex, require careful control to insure success and as such are best performed in a clean room environment. It is generally impractical or inadvisable to attempt gas purging procedures under field conditions. Described below is a method of maintaining a drop-on-demand (DOD) printhead in a gas-free state prior to field installation.
