In high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a solvent or solvents from one or more reservoirs are pumped through a column at high pressures. It is important that the solvents be as free of any entrained gases as possible and to this end, various procedures are known for degasing. Shown in the drawing schematically is one such system in which any gases that are removed from the solvent are not exposed to any laboratory atmosphere in which the HPLC is being used.
