Problem: Existing program files may contain very little descriptive information about data in the file. In some cases, it is possible to identify the logical record, sometimes it is not, and seldom is it possible to determine from the data any field boundaries within records or the representation of data in the fields. Descriptive information is, however, needed to place data into data structures. The complete descriptive information is, however, available in the application program. Previously, an approach was to formulate an algorithm which would type the fields, save representational information, and retain both data and descriptive information. This process is manual and has to be done separately for each file. This article defines a method for automating this process.
