Recording of Gated Holograms Using Two Photon Photochemistry

A method for recording multiple holograms with a material exhibiting four-level, two-photon photochemistry is described. In a material system of this type, whose energy level scheme is shown in Fig. 1, the absorption of a photon at the frequency omega(1) converts the material from its ground state to an intermediate level, i.e., state 2. State 2 is metastable and is rapidly converted into state 3. State 3 can then absorb a photon at the frequency omega(2) and produce state 4 which results in the photochemistry that produces a hologram. The two frequencies omega(1) and omega(2) may or may not be equal in value.
