Line Tearing and Width Correction by EHT Compensation
This article describes a technique for the use of existing width modulation
circuitry to compensate for EHT sag and the correction of line tearing and width
changes by EHT compensation.
Heavy loading of the EHT supply can cause "sagging" of the high voltage
supply to the CRT due to high supply impedance (typically 2 MOmega). This can
cause bulging of solid blocks of video data on the screen due to width variation
over the screen or line tearing caused by unbalanced loading of the supply due
to video content changing from odd field to even field. The usual methods of
correcting this are to either lower the EHT supply impedance using a separate
regulator or a capacitor across the EHT supply, which are expensive and
complex, or to use resistance in series with a line output transformer circuit to
correct the width depending upon the current drawn from the EHT supply.
However, an alternative method is to use existing pin cushion correction
modulation circuitry to correct the width accordingly (see the figure).
This can be achieved by using a small sense resistor to monitor the EHT
voltage and then feeding this derived waveform into the existing width modulation
circuit in the correct proportion. To approximate a square root law the width is
varied in direct proportion to the sensed EHT voltage plus a constant voltage
equal to the nominal sensed value. i.e., width AlphaE(o) + DeltaE + const,
