Sequencer for Converting any Shift Register into a Shift Register having a Lesser Number of Positions

The present structure is utilizable to convert any shift register having a designated number of bit positions into a bidirectional shift register utilizing a lesser number of bit positions. The concept involves feedback to both ends of the shift register from a position separated from the respective end by the number of bits equal to the size of the smaller shift register into which the initial shift register is to be converted. For example, we will now describe how the modified shift register having eight positions is converted into a six-position shift register. Such a six-position shift register may be used to control a three-phase stepper motor in its logical mode where the stepper motor has two phases on and in a detenting mode where the stepper motor has a single phase on.
