Simulated Shift Left Instruction
In a data processor which does not have an N-place shift left instruction, the
effect of such an instruction can be realized using a sequence of one-place shift-
right and rotate-right instructions.
A logical shift-left (SL) moves all bits of a register to the left, dropping bits off
the left end and moving zeros into the vacant bit positions on the right. A logical
shift-right (SR) is similar, moving to the right. A rotate-right (RR) moves all bits,to
the right, but fills the vacant positions on the left with the bits moved off the right,
in the same order. A left shift of N bit positions in a register having P bit positions
can be accomplished by: Rotate Right P-N bit positions; Shift Right N bit
positions; Rotate Right P-N bit positions;,
As examples, the three columns below show left shifts of one, two and three
