A data storage system has three levels of devices: a recording device, controller device and a staging adapter device. Arrays of these devices are interconnected by a plurality of paths extending between the various staging adapters to the controller devices and between the controller devices to the recording devices. Generally, a staging adapter can communicate with a plurality of controller devices and thence with a larger plurality of recording devices. A plurality of staging devices can be connected to the same recording device. When an error is detected and that error is in a path, the initial alternate pathing will be under the path umbrella of the first staging adapter.
