Sampling Method of Monitoring Machine State

Signals derived from machine state monitoring are input at constant and regular intervals through two 8-bit I/O ports in a microprocessor-controlled electromechanical device without requiring dedicated host and/or processing overhead. Permitted is a degree of imprecision in the timing of the input signals in relation to real time machine processes being monitored. Eliminated from consideration are signal state transitions of less than an arbitrary duration. As such, systems which cannot be expected to guarantee output machine state signals on a constant and regular basis can be reliably monitored.
