Optimum Developer Setting in Copier
A tester analyzes copies made on a copier at different developer gate
settings and indicates the optimum setting by identifying the knee of the resulting
image density curve.
Successive copies 1-9, supplied by a tested copier (not shown), carry images
resulting from different developer-gate settings. The tester's optics 10 images
each sheet, in turn, onto a central bank of photodiodes 11-18 in an array 19. An
analog-to-digital converter 14 supplies digital representations to a processor 15
of the light value on each of the photodiodes for each of the copies.
The processor 15 calculates and plots a curve 16, relating the light density to
the developer-gate opening. The processor compares each light density with
prior and subsequent light densities to identify changes exceeding a
predetermined value, for example, 12%, indicating the knee of the curve 16. The
processor identifies the knee as a mark 17 on the plot to specify the optimum
gate opening. The processor may also average the readings from the
