This system measures linear velocity through a non-contact method. Fig 1 illustrates the basic components of the system. A light source 3 such as a helium neon laser fitted with a collimator and beam expander provides a collimated light beam 5. The light beam illuminates a large active area photosensitive device 7. An adjustable aperture is used to select the amount of illuminated active area. The light beam is intersected by a precision diameter wire 9, causing a shadow 11 of known dimensions to be cast across the photosensor.
