With many impact or other types of printers in which the carrier operates in an open loop, i.e., the carrier is activated to proceed to a designated position with no feedback indicating whether the carrier has reached or passed that position, it is desirable that some means be provided to insure that the carrier does not crash into the machine frame in case of erroneous data concerning the final carrier position in a given line. A switching device is needed that will provide a clearly defined switch detection point. However, the switch cannot be conventionally cushioned to absorb the impact of the carrier as this would make the switching point or switch contact position "mushier" or less definite.
