Method of Improving Disk Controller Performance
Improved response time for program paging is achieved by loading a main
memory in accordance with second pass, non-binding, program prefetch hints.
Included in the structural makeup of existing virtual memory systems are a
high capacity program disk, a limited capacity buffer, and a logic controlled disk
controller connected to a processor. Stored on the disk are a large number of
programs and/or instructions stored in fixed length blocks which can be
transferred to corresponding blocks in the buffer. Since the number of blocks on
the disk far exceeds the number of blocks in the buffer, all programming on the
disk is not available to the processor at all times without delay.
Delays can be reduced with an increase in performance by initially
performing all system programming and debugging in a normal manner. When
these operations are complete, the order of blocks needed from the disk is
somewhat predictable. This factor can be used to insert into the programs
prefetch hints for causing the early transfer of certain blocks from the disk to the
buffer. The availability of the blocks in the buffer when the processor is ready
eliminates lost time in fetching needed blocks from the disk on a real-time basis.

prefetch hints be honored, that the prefetch hints not be required to be accurate,
