Grooved Vacuum Transport Pulleys
The effective driving area of a vacuum transport system is increased by
placing grooves on the surface of the pulleys which are used to transport the belt.
The vacuum transport system includes a transport belt 5 positioned around a
pair of spaced pulleys 1. The pulley belt arrangement is encased in a vacuum
plenum 6. The linear holes 8 in belt 5 are coincident with a set of holes in the top
4 of the plenum. This configuration allows a portion of the belt on top of each
pulley 1 (distance A in Fig. 1) as well as the area between the pulleys (distance B
in Fig. 1) to contribute to the effective driving area of the system.
The leakage area 10 around the pulleys is minimized by accurate tolerances
and the use of foam or other materials for covering the holes. Grooves 12 (Fig. 3) are machined along the circumference of the pulleys. The spacing D is
substantially the same as the spacing B between the holes on the belt.
