When a start stop terminal operates in half duplex transmission mode via a full duplex transmission facility, it is impossible to know whether a contention will occur or not, as both ends - terminal and host - may initiate a transmission simultaneously. The proposed solution prevents data from being lost should a transmission occur in contention mode, since the start-stop line communication protocol does not provide facilities for retransmission.
