This article describes a technique for the in situ measurement of the insulating properties of a gas panel dielectric material. Standard procedure for preparing a glass sample for dielectric measurement involves casting a cylinder of the material from a melt. Slices of the cylinder are then polished in preparation for evaporation of metal electrodes. The thermal process, sample thickness, surface finish and evaporation sequence are all foreign to the dielectric material as it is used in the gas panel.
