In large area all-points addressable plasma discharge display devices it is necessary to provide and maintain a uniform chamber gap between the two substrate plates over the entire display area. Such control is provided by spacing elements which may comprise metallic rectangular rods of nickel-iron alloy which are bonded between conductor lines to the dielectric surface of one of the substrates. Since the spacing elements are positioned adjacent to operating cells, they are oxidized prior to bonding, whereby the surface of the spacer elements will be resistant to sputtering by ion bombardment during the plasma discharge. Oxidation of the spacer surface also aids in reducing the visibility of spacers in the operating display.
