It is sometimes advantageous to locate small optically readable spots between the usual magnetic data tracks of a magnetic recording medium. For example, the optical tracks can carry tracking information that is read optically and used for controlling the operation of locating a read head at a position that is to be read magnetically. The spots are less than one micron in diameter and can be conveniently located on the magnetic medium.
