Refraction or reflection at a surface of a movable liquid medium is used to manipulate an optical beam. In optical systems in general, and in fiber-optic systems in particular, it is often required to switch an optical signal between two or more output ports. Many such switches have been proposed, each offering a different mix of advantages in terms of speed of operation, power requirements, simplicity of construction, stability, throughput loss, etc. We disclose here another class of optical switches and deflectors which offer better performance in many of these respects.
