Whenever a wire matrix printer includes a round platen against which the printing occurs, the vertically oriented print wires each travel different distances. In the figure it can be readily seen that the distance D2 from the end of print wires 1 and 8 to the platen is greater than the distance D1 from print wires 4 and 5 to the platen.
