For making visible the domain structure of magnetic materials, the magneto-optical Kerr effect is favorably used. The increasing miniaturization of the magnetic components (thin-film magnetic heads, bubble storage structures, etc.) leads to great magnification and strong light sources. As light sources, lasers can be used to good effect, but at high optical resolutions laser speckles occur, limiting the use of the lasers.
