To extract material, such as contaminants or lubricant, from the surface of a magnetic disk for measurement purposes and analysis, the disk may be slowly rotated for one revolution while a movable jet dispenses solvent on a selected band or region of the disk. The solvent and any dissolved material are collected in a pre-weighed dish placed beneath the disk. The dish is then weighed to determine the amount of contaminants or lubricant in the selected band. The collected contaminants can, if desired, be analyzed.
