A light valve suitable for amplifying weak light signals and suitable for use in projection displays or document scanners can be constructed by shifting the position of a surface polariton resonance by changes in refractive index of a liquid crystal. These latter changes are induced in the liquid crystal by irradiation of a photoconductor adjacent to the liquid crystal.
