In a communication system comprising a single transmission medium and a plurality of stations, but having no central control, a mechanism must be provided that regulates access to the medium. When several stations want to transmit simultaneously, this access mechanism must avoid loss of information but enable sequential access to the medium by those stations that are ready to send.
