Present apparatus provides a word processing system having display means which is relatively inexpensive. The display means involves two discrete displays. The first display is a relatively inexpensive small display which does not contain any intelligible alphanumeric information, but rather gives the overall format of the alphanumeric document being formulated. Conveniently, a cursor may move along this format keeping track of a particular line or lines that are being displayed on the second discrete display which may conveniently be a one-line display of the alphanumeric characters. In this manner it is possible in a relatively inexpensive combination of two simple displays to give the operator the sense of both the format of the document as well as discrete information concerning the line being printed or edited.
