Circuit Repair/Work Of Metallized Polymide Substrated
The present method has the unique ability in that it can be used to repair
circuitry at the substrate level and also can be used to make necessary
engineering changes for single and multi-chip modules.
At substrate level, metallized circuit line defects can be repaired by micro-
surface welding small sizes of wire. The wire attachment is achieved by placing
a piece of wire over both ends of the defect and welding it in place. By bridging
the defect, the attached wire will function to complete the circuit line. This
operation can be utilized when "open" repairs are to be made. The repair for a
"short" is similar to the "open" repair except that the shorted area must be cut or
isolated out from the network circuitry. After cutting in two places, the shorted
area is isolated and a piece of wire is jumpered across the cuts and the ends of
the wire are attached to circuit lines by micro-surface welding in the same
manner as for an "open" repair. The cutting operation is achieved by
implementing a sharp micro-tool to cut the circuit lines. This cutting operation is
preferably carried out by hand so that the isolated area is free of residue.
The present method provides the ability to remove certain portions of the
conductive metallurgy without destroying the base polymeric insulator. Also, in
order to make a delete, it is not necessary to have low metal adhesion between
the base end the circuit metallurgy.
