The purpose of the last gate in a CCD (charge-coupled device) shift register is to prevent charge flow from the last storage well to the sense node during precharging time. This way, the same clock can be used for the last storage gate and the reset (or precharge) device, and the other clock can be used to sense the charge on the sense node. The charge is dumped onto the sense node during the falling edge of the clock used at the last storage gate and to reset the gate. To get all of the charge at the sense node, the channel potential under the output gate voltage, Vog, has to be higher than the storage gate channel potential.
