Emitter Correction Circuit
The angular position of printer motors is generally detected through the use
of an emitter disk coupled to rotate with the motor and cooperating with emitter
detectors fixed relative to motor rotation.
A problem exists during a high speed to low speed drive transition. Due to
mechanical interconnections of the high and low speed drives, the disk stops and
reverses for a short period of time until the low speed drive engages. If one
detector only is used, a false emitter pulse can be generated and detected if the
edge of a window on the disk nears the photodetection region. This would then
lead to a false angular position detection. This can be avoided by using two out-
of-phase detectors instead of one, said detectors feeding the logic circuit shown
in Fig. 1. The two detectors are adjusted such that an edge of signal EMA
provided by any one of them will not be aligned with an edge of the signal EMB
provided by the other. Therefore, if the disk stops, only one edge could be near
the photo-detection region at a given time. The input of the logic board will be
set to zero level on the falling edge of EMA.
As shown in Fig. 1, the input signals EMA and EMB are respectively fed into
latches C1 and C2 through inverters A1 and A2-A3. The outputs Q1 and Q2 of
C1 and C2 respectively are fed into a latch B2-B3. One of the outputs of the B2-
