U.S. Patent 4,086,601 discloses a guard drop scheme which illustrates the necessity for providing a scheme for printing in a continuous stream, deflected scan type ink jet printer. Such a scheme is required to compensate for the effects of the print drops, as they emerge from the charge electrode and proceed toward the paper, of charge interaction between adjacent print droplets, and to compensate for the aerodynamic effect of still air on the flight of the ink drop. However, in U.S. Patent 4,097,872, there is disclosed an aspirator for an ink jet printer, the aspirator serving to move air through the tunnel formed by the deflection plates at a velocity substantially equal to the velocity of the ink.
