Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are mounted on the arm of a tuning fork to provide a mechanically multiplexed display. When the tuning fork is driven into oscillation, the LEDs move vertically in a sine wave oscillation. The non-linear region of oscillation is utilized to provide useful information to the operator by generating symbols the dot spacing of which is not critical.
