Abstract

If supermarket or other label scanners using laser light sources are to operate with optimum reliability, the laser output must exceed a predetermined power level. The hard sealed HeNe lasers which are commonly used in label scanners fail primarily because of optical contamination and leaks. Complete laser failure is normally preceded by several days of decaying laser output. By tracking laser output power on a day to day basis, the failure of a laser can be predicted, making it possible to replace the laser before scanner performance is affected.
