The molecular weight of macromolecules determine many of their physical as well as chemical properties. The molecular weight is typically controlled during the polymerization reaction used to form the macromolecule. Unfortunately, however, many polymer preparations contain some small percentage of high molecular weight components which interfere with the desired properties. The problem may manifest itself in micro gels which cannot be filtered, or in preparations which cannot be dissolved in useful concentrations.
