In some data processing system environments, a large amount of data is frequently dumped or restored between a DASD (direct-access storage device) and tape. It is desirable, and sometimes necessary, for the tape unit to carry out the dump/restore operation in a high speed nonstop "streaming" mode, as opposed to the conventional slow "start-stop" mode. However, recovery time from s tape overrun in the streaming mode is substantial (e.g., upwards of a second).
