A known type of magnetic disk file employs magnetic heads, mounted on a support arm, which can be positioned over the surface of the disks by means of a rotary positioning mechanism. The heads are biased towards the disk surface by a leaf spring and, when the disk is at rest, are in contact with the disk. When the disk is in motion, the heeds fly on the air bearing film carried with the disk. A problem occurs when the head/arm assembly has to be withdrawn beyond the periphery of the disk, e.g., for checking or servicing.
