This article describes a solution to a problem concerned with the generation of selector pen bars with an IBM 3270-compatible selector pen implementation of a multiple partitioned display. A selector pen detectable (SPD) field is defined by an SPD field attribute character followed by a valid (null, space, question mark, greater than or ampersand) designator character. In addition, a programming restriction ensures that if the SPD field attribute character is not the first character in a row of the display (or partition), it is always preceded by three spaces or null characters.
