Material restraints and a tiltable rollered bed are provided for a driverless
robot to permit automatic loading and unloading of the robot and secure
transporting of materials on the robot.
Powered driverless vehicles are structured to track a routed
path and programmable to stop along the path for loading and
unloading. In the past, loading and unloading have been
accomplished manually with elaborate automatic apparatus, etc., which
have increased handling costs in terms of either labor or equipment.
These costs can be significantly reduced with a minimal equipment
investment by taking advantage of gravity.
A robot or vehicle 1 is provided with a tiltable bed 2 having a plurality of
rollers 3 upon which materials are to be carried. Side restraints, such as 4, are
carried by vehicle 1 to maintain materials on vehicle 1 during transporting.
For loading an empty vehicle 1, vehicle 1 is first aligned with
a load station 5. As shown in Fig. 1, station 5 includes a bed 6
tilting downwardly and to the left. Bed 6 has a plurality of rollers 7. Prior to alignment of vehicle 1 and station 5, leftward movement
of a crate 8 positioned on rollers 7 is inhibited by a stop 9. Stop
9 is a plunger which is positionable by a cylinder 10. Following
alignment of vehicle 1 and station 5, end 11 of bed 2 is tilted up
to provide a straight line path between the tops of rollers 3 and 7.
The tilting of bed 2 occurs upon operation of a cylinder 12 and
