Method for Testing Optical Tachometers

A procedure for isolating problems in a processor-controlled servo system makes use of an optical tachometer. The method provides (1) means for testing the tachometer hardware to read, measure and time the tachometer pulses over one or more revolutions to determine proper operation and (2) means for determining the direction of rotation and at what velocity the correct determination of rotation begins to fail. By using this two part test, it can usually be determined that the problem is in the hardware portion of the apparatus if test number one-is failed and that it is in the electrical portion of the tachometer apparatus if test one is passed but test two is failed.
