Abstract

A controlling programmable unit (CPU) controls a plurality of control units (CUs) via a single connection. The single connection may consist of electrical control lines divided into data busses and tag lines. Each CU responds to tag signal combinations plus an address signal on a data bus for performing data processing operations. During normal operations a set of connection circuits partially decode the tag signals for determining whether or not the programmable portion of CU is to be used. If so, the programmable portion, which may include a microprocessor (not shown), decodes via microcode the command signals received over the bus lines of the connection. Based upon such decoding, signals are generated and transferred to one or more devices via connection circuits in CU between the devices and the programmable portion.
