Modified Wrap Down Spring Clutch for Typewriters and the Like

Illustrated in the drawings and described below is a modified wrap down spring clutch and means for engaging it. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the clutch comprises an input arbor 1 which is fixed to a constantly rotating shaft 3. A right-hand wound spring 4 is fixed to the arbor 1 by a ring clamp 5 while sleeve 6 covers the entire length of the spring 4, the sleeve including a slot 8 (Fig. 2) through which the bent-up end 7 of the spring 4 projects. An output arbor 2 is coupled to a gear 15 and a second arbor 16 forming an assembly which is free to rotate on the shaft 3. As can be seen from the drawing, except in the region under the clamp 5, the spring 4 is in its free state and its interior diameter exceeds the outside diameter of the arbors 1 and 2 by a discrete amount.
