Position and Velocity Information Recovery from Rotational Drive Systems

Described below is a synchronous electro-optical rotary position transducer system which gives both position and velocity information from rotary shafts, gears, cams, motors or other rotary actuators. The recovered signals are smooth and continuous in nature, free of pulse-type quantizing noise, such as found and common in shaft position encoders, or commutator ripple common to tachometers. This system may be employed to measure shaft speed, to evaluate performance of rotary mechanisms, or to provide feedback signals in position and motion control systems.
