Data processing systems sometimes include diagnostic programs which are called when extraordinary events, such as transmission errors, occur at a predetermined rate over a period of time. For example, a diagnostic program might be called if periodic sampling shows that the ratio of extraordinary to ordinary events is greater than 5% over a half-hour period. This article describes a technique for determining whether the extraordinary event threshold has been exceeded.
