Surface Particle Analyzer
This article describes a system which is employed for determining relative
concentrations of surface particles on a casting or other surface which is to be
used in a clean air environment.
The figure shows a commercial particle counter 11 which has a detector cup
12 for collecting samples from the surface 13 of the casting 10 to be checked.
Filtered air is fed through line 14 which impinges on the sample and dislodges
any resident particles that may be on the surface of the sample. These particles
are collected by the tube 15 and drawn to the particle analyzer 11 for quantitative
evaluation and, thus, a measurement of the surface cleanliness of the sample
surface 13 per unit of area. The entering and exit streams are reasonably
balanced, but not accurately since a small over or under pressure relative to
ambient will be sealed off by the edge 6 of the cup 12. The cup diameter D can
be tailored to the surface area being sampled. The force of the air impinging on
the sample can also be varied by controlling the pressure and volume in line 14
by a suitable orifice.
Such an arrangement allows the checking of the surfaces of the casting for a
predetermined degree of cleanliness on which to judge whether a particular
casting is suitable for the clean air environment or whether a particular process
step in the cleaning of the casting is effective.
