Method for Evaluation of Potentiostat Control Systems and Circuit
This circuit arrangement is used in evaluating potentiostat control circuitry
that itself is used for controlling and measuring electric parameters of an
electrode reaction in an electrochemical cell 10.
As depicted schematically, the cell 10 comprises a working electrode 12, a
reference electrode 14, and a counter electrode 16. This cell is simulated by a
load 20 having three terminals 22, 24 and 26 which correspond to the terminals
22', 24' and 26' to which the electrodes of the cell 10 are connected. These
terminals, together with an input terminal 28, are the terminals to which a
potentiostat circuit 30 under test is connected. The exemplary potentiostat circuit
30 shown here essentially comprises a voltage-to-current converter circuit 31.
A square-wave generating circuit 32 capable of providing a square wave up
to /+/- 1 volt in amplitude over a frequency range up to 100 KHz and a source 34
of direct potential capable of providing up to +/- 1 volt are connected in series
between input terminal 28 of the circuit 30 under test and ground.
Monitoring circuitry comprises a unity gain amplifier circuit 36 having an input
lead connected to a monitoring terminal 38 on the load 20, and a reference lead
connected to ground. The output of the amplifier circuit 36 is connected to a
vertical deflection terminal of an oscilloscope 40 for observing the time variation
of the potential difference. An AC voltmeter 42 is connected between the output
terminal of the amplifier circuit 36 and the junction between the generator 32 and
the variable DC source 34.
The dummy load 20 comprises a precision 100-ohm resistor 44 simulating
the resistance between the counter electrode 16 and the reference electrode 14
