This article describes a method for operating a raster-driven printer in an operating mode disconnected from a message source. This is especially advantageous where the printer generates recurrent patterns so as to avoid repeated reference by the printer. The method includes the steps of sending a message encapsulating the pattern identity, and start and stop locations to the printer control element. The control element includes means for storing precoded bit streams as source patterns for line generations. Next, the control unit applies the source pattern to the output element within the constraints contained within the message.
